Adacen presents its new campaign with the support of social and political representatives.
It is dedicated to the promotion of an active aging process and it will be developed over next year.  Some twenty-odd politicians, sportspersons and representatives of social entities accompanied and supported the Association for Cerebral Damage in Navarra (Adacen) in the presentation of a campaign which takes place on the International Day for Acquired Cerebral Damage, which is being celebrated today. On this occasion, it is centered on the promotion of an active and healthy life for senior citizens as the best form of fighting against age and dependence.
Some twenty representatives from the world of politics, spot and social entities joined up to support the Association of Cerebral Damage in Navarra (Adacen) at the presentation of the campaign which each year is enacted on the International Day of Acquired Cerebral Damage and which has been commemorated today. On this occasion the campaign is centered on the promotion of an active and healthy life as a way of extending the aging process and the corresponding situations of dependence.

“When do you think you should begin to look after yourself in order to reach old age in the best possible conditions? Do you think it is enough to begin to think of that when you retire?” This is how Silvia Astrain Mendoza, The person responsible for Communication and RSC in Adacen, began her talk in front of a considerable public gathering from different institutions such as politicians, social services entities and professionals from Navarra. “The aging process begins at 30 years of age, which is when the genetic program begins to slowly deteriorate at a rhythm of 1% annually, which means that at around the age of 50 years have already lost between 20 and 40 per cent of our regenerative capacity. Consequently, it becomes more difficult to lose weight, lower the levels of certain hormones, memory loss increases…. The good news is that this is not an irremediable process and we can help you to slow up the process,” she went on to underline.

At the event celebrated this morning in Carlos III Street, in Pamplona, The Manager of Adacen, Francisco Fernández Nistal pointed out that, “in order to celebrate our 25th anniversary we have decided to come out with a positive campaign where we must try to implicate our public representatives and social welfare entities to face up to the important challenge that old age represents in our society. Our community has one of the highest life expectancies in Europe and indeed in the world. According to the likely population growth over the next few years researched by the Institute for Statistics, in 2022, 20% of the population of Navarra will be over the age of 64 and 7% will be over 80.

Aging in a healthy active manner would save great sums of money for the Health and Social Security Departments and it would be very positive for all of us as it would allow us to enjoy an old age in an independent and enjoyable manner over a longer period of time”.

“Aging”, she reminded us, “is one of the largest problems to which we must give a prompt response to in society over the next couple of decades. A longer life expectancy means there will be a greater number of chronic cases over a longer period. There will be neurological deficiencies and other health problems which will create dependency. In a period of time where kindergartens are being closed and senior residences and day centers are being opened, it is necessary to face up to this theme of old age as soon as possible and in a global and transversal manner”.
Old age is not something which depends exclusively on the Government’s Department of Health or Social Security. It implies taking measures in other areas of society as determining factors are also things like economics, gender, accessibility, culture and general behavior among others. The WHO affirms that all levels and sectors of the governments contribute to a healthy old age.
Political action which promotes active and healthy steps for old age will mean being able to keep the elderly in their homes and so avoid the expense of health and social welfare care, which will save money for society while helping old people achieve a better quality of life.
The Government of Navarra has already begun to create some strategies which are aimed at all those over 60 years in order to achieve a healthy old age for the elderly. Adacen is also developing a program in this field at its center in Azpilagaña and working in collaboration with different Town Halls and centered on its senior citizens.

However, it is not enough to begin to take care of ourselves when we are already old but rather it needs to be started in our fourth or fifth decade of life so that we can arrive to old age in the best possible conditions. “For that reason”, states Fernández Nistal, “we have started this campaign which is above all a social one, in order to implicate all kinds of people and entities who have something to say in this field. We have chosen this act as the final one in our series of activities to celebrate our 25th anniversary because we believe that the promotion of an active old age and the service facilities for old people will be an important part of our work over the next 25 years”.

The main objectives of the campaign begun by Adacen are:

- To generate a culture and awareness of prevention of neurological and cardiovascular illnesses by means of controlling the main risk factors of these illnesses.
-  To make the public aware of the importance of maintaining healthy habits in an active manner from the fourth decade of our lives onwards. Aging is not exclusive to the old.
- To instigate a culture of healthy habits and to make these known to the general public: to give up smoking, to do physical exercise, maintain an active life, to develop social relationships, to keep the mind active, to eat in a healthy manner…
- To bring to the public eye information about groups, people, associations and entities that are promoting healthy lifestyles in Navarra, both physical and social within the range of ages that the campaign is aimed at: cultural activities for adults and mature people, volunteer groups, associations from sports clubs, groups, etc. etc.
After the presentation of the campaign, José Luis Herrera read out a manifesto for the Day of Cerebral Damage.

Hip – Hop in the 50s and a family photo
To bring the presentation to a close, and as an example that age does not need to be off-limits to anything or to anyone, the hip-hop group Arkadia Premium, made up of people all over 40 years of age, offered a show. Several of their components are parents of the members of the group that this academy in Barañain presented in the TV show Got Talent in which they have been chosen as finalists and they will shortly know if they are classified as semi-finalists. Sagrario Pérez and Aída Martínez are the founders of this academy.

After the show, all those who attended had their photo taken in their sports gear as a gesture of support for this campaign.

The campaign

The campaign is aimed at people of between 40 and 65 years of age and is based on street actions and some on-line promotion (on the web and social networks). It consists of several images and messages with objects which will be recognized by all those who were born in the 70s or earlier, and which have know become largely obsolete objects (cassette tapes, video tapes... walkmans, televisions, some games from those decades,  musical groups, and even some places in Pamplona and Navarra that no longer exist). These are accompanied by a slogan “If you recognize these…it is time to start taking care of yourself” and the catchphrase:  “Take care of yourself today so that you can go on enjoying yourself tomorrow”.

A micro site has been created in the new Adacen webpage in order to share these and other images which will be created over time. In this micro site there will be a section dedicated to healthy lifestyle habits and another one, with a list of connections where contacts for different groups can be found who can help us to achieve a healthy lifestyle within Navarra. These will be associations of volunteers or of senior sportspeople and so…all involved in some way in promoting physical training and activities.
There will also be cultural activities aimed at a mature public. In short, all those groups or activities which offer the opportunity to do physical exercise, to eat more healthily, to widen social contacts, for senior citizens.  In addition, throughout the rest of the year there will be several events on the streets in collaboration with these groups and entities.
The aim is to have a fun campaign which will hopefully generate “a fun scene” and which will catch the public eye in a positive way and help to create a feeling of belonging to a group.

Adacen and Aging

Adacen has been working on this theme for the past few years with the program Aging Together, which deals with the effort of prolonging the useful life of the users and keeping them at home where they can achieve the greatest autonomy. The aims of this project are: To improve the quality of life of dependent people, giving them as much autonomy as possible and strengthening the social support of their families. To get the necessary support so that the people who are being assisted can spend as long as possible in their own communities. It is also hoped that support can be given to those family members of the dependent people, reducing the workload and stress of the carers. Actions of social support and psychological help for these family carers with the aim of contributing to a normalization of their situation.

Within the framework of this program, Adacen has set up a series of resources and workshops aimed at these senior citizens who, because of their dependent situation, need specialized care. The program is being developed at their center in Azpilagaña and also in Beriain, Aranguren, Zizur Mayor, Olza and in Valle de Egües in collaboration with their Town Halls, health centers and social services. Adacen offers flexible methods of care and adapted to the individual needs of the dependents.

Some facts about aging (Source: World Health Organization)

Between 2015 and 2050 the proportion of the population of the world with more than 60 years of age will move from 900 to 2000 million, which represents an increase from 12% to 22% At present, there are no proofs in existence that would indicate that senior citizens presently enjoy better health than that of their parents. The main causes of death among the elderly are heart attacks, ictus strokes and chronic neumopathies.

Biologic aging does not always correspond to years. Some eighty-year olds enjoy biologic physical faculties that a twenty-odd might envy, while others do suffer deterioration at an earlier age than others. Maintaining a healthy and active lifestyle has a big influence on these faculties.

Health in the elderly is not a question of chance. The greater part of the health of old people depends on their physical and social background. These are factors that have an influence on old age even from the infancy of the person.  The health systems of most countries are not prepared to face the needs of the old, who tend to suffer various chronic illnesses and geriatric syndromes.
